This was Semi-Final 2 of the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest on Thursday

The second semi-final was probably the semi-final of surprises in every way on the evening of 12 May – check out our recap update for all the individual performances as well as the guest productions; watch and relive it with us!

Yes, the surprises. To start with, right from the start, “we opened with a fun scene from Allessandro Catelan, who experienced (again) the international atmosphere and blew the lid off the Big Brains who make the big decisions backstage. When he hears the drums, he spreads his arms. Not a recent addition to Chanel’s dance troupe, but he gets into the ‘spirit of the occasion’… That’s the Italian way, that’s the Italian way…

Then, of course, the second semi-final was all about the songs, but the Eurovision Song Contest is nothing without guest performances. “While the votes were coming in, Laura Pausini and Mika sang together for the first time. Laura had changed her dress into some ethereal white chiffon as if she were the angel who would vanquish Ochman’s ghosts. They sing Sting’s classic “Fragile” and then change tempo to Patti Smith’s “People Have The Power”. It’s an uplifting moment and their voices work so well together…”

But there was also an encore performance in this programme that everyone was looking forward to the Il Volo trio, of course. “Time to meet two tenors and a baritone, but not in the usual Italian operatic tradition. Il Volo brings a little opera to the PalaOlimpico stage – they are huge on social media and known worldwide. Piero and Ignazio are on stage, and Gianluca has joined from afar because Covid is what makes ILL VOLO. Sigh. Tough crowd. Anyway, they’re singing ‘Grande Amore’ and PalaOlimpico is bringing them under the roof.” (Yes, and with that, the Eurovision official site has managed to make the worst pun of the season…) But now for the processing…
