Background

The new year begins with a debut for the Vienna Philharmonic: at the traditional New Year’s Eve concert on 1 January 2026, Yannick Nézet-Séguin will raise his baton for the first time in the Musikverein’s Golden Hall.

We are continuing our tradition, which began more than seven years ago on the OurVision International website, by not only showcasing productions related to the Eurovision Song Contest, but also bringing our readers other types of broadcasts aired by member broadcasters of the Eurovision Network. One such broadcast is the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert, which will be organized again this year by (host of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2026) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), with the support of Rolex.

On January 1st, as part of a concert series that has been running for more than eight and a half decades, we will once again raise our glasses to the music of the legendary Strauss family to welcome in the new year. The Vienna Philharmonic sees these New Year’s concerts as its mission to unite the audience in a shared celebration of hope, friendship, and peace through the universal language of music—and this perhaps resonates with the Eurovision Song Contest’s now-permanent slogan, “United by Music”.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

Yannick Nézet-Séguin made his debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2010 at the Mozart Week in Salzburg. Since then, he has regularly conducted joint concerts in Vienna and Salzburg, as well as on tours. A particular highlight was the 2023 Summer Night Concert under his musical direction. On January 1, 2026, he will conduct the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert for the first time.

As a guest conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin also collaborates with many leading European orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted concerts at the Salzburg Festival and at numerous European festivals, including those in Edinburgh, Lucerne, and the BBC Proms in London. In the summer, he has conducted in North America, including at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, as well as in Lanaudière, Vail, and Saratoga. A celebrated opera conductor, he has appeared at the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Dutch National O-pera, and the Salzburg Festival.

INTERMISSION (from cca. 11:50)

To mark the 250th anniversary of Vienna’s Albertina, this year’s film brings the collection’s works of art to life with the magic of music during the concert intermission. After the Albertina closes its doors to visitors, the camera follows a night guard on his rounds through the tradition-steeped Viennese museum. Along the way, he meets various employees—from the cleaner to the restorer to the director—whom he transports into a fantasy world from Monet to Kandinsky.

In five episodes, the film “Der Zauber der Kunst – 250 Jahre Albertina” (The Magic of Art – 250 Years of the Albertina) spans from Impressionism to Modernism, from the present day to the courtly world. Each image opens the door to a different world of film and music, with the participation of selected ensembles from the Vienna Philharmonic.

“I wanted to show that art doesn’t just live in frames hanging on walls, but also in people’s minds and hearts,” says director Alex Wieser. “The moment music and images come together, something special happens—a magic that dissolves the boundaries between eras and genres.”

BALLET INTERLUDES IN THE PROGRAM

John Neumeier is responsible for the choreography of the two ballet interludes in the concert broadcast for the third time, following 1999 and 2006. He led the Hamburg Ballet for more than 50 years and is one of the most significant contemporary choreographers thanks to his extraordinary creations. The ballet costumes were designed by Swiss designer Albert Kriemler, creative director of the AKRIS fashion brand. John Neumeier and Albert Kriemler began working together exactly 20 years ago on the ballets for the 2006 New Year’s Concert, and since then they have collaborated on numerous projects and stage productions.

For the waltz “Rosen aus dem Süden” (Roses from the South), Neumeier created an expressive and emotional tribute to the so-called “Viennese rose” in the halls of the MAK, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.

The Hofburg Palace in Vienna is home to the Diplomaten-Polka, composed by Johann Strauss Jr., whose choreography takes a humorous approach to the themes of diplomacy, bureaucracy, and officialdom. A total of twelve dancers from the Vienna State Ballet performed in front of the camera: Ketevan Papava, principal dancer, and newly appointed principal dancer Timoor Afshar, as well as Natalya Butchko and Géraud Wielick, Gaia Fredianelli and Calogero Failla, and Alaia Rogers-Maman and Victor Cagnin. The diplomat polka was danced by Alessandro Frola, Natalya Butchko, Gaia Fredianelli, Anita Manolova, Tatiana Mazniak, and Laura Cislaghi.

Michael Beyer is responsible for directing the ballet recordings made in advance in August 2025, and will also be in charge of the television crew equipped with 14 cameras during the broadcast on January 1.

The Golden Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein is also being decorated for the first day of the year as part of what has become a tradition: Since 2015, more than 150 countries around the world have been able to admire the handcrafted creations of the Vienna City Gardens and Austrian gardeners and florists, which frame this prestigious event year after year – including the 86th concert.

The 68th edition of this global event, broadcast by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), can be viewed at broadcast by 150 countries’ broadcasters.
