The ESC 2023 Grand Final of the continental competition, organized by the BBC and the EBU (European Broadcasting Union), will once again be a colorful show for fans and visitors alike, with the list of extra acts announced on 17 April, including a star-studded line-up of Eurovision legends taking to the stage in Liverpool.
The show, which will last almost four hours, will open with the return of 2022 winners Kalush Orchestra with a revamped version of their then-competition song, which they will combine with their new song “Changes”. They will be joined from Ukraine by former contestants Go_A (UKR20-21), previous Ukrainen winner Jamala (UKR16), Tina Karol (UKR04), who is also competing, and 2007 hitmaker Verka Serduchka with her band. The opening performance will be a clear tribute to the song Stefania, with musical giant Andrew Lloyd Webber and last year’s runner-up Sam Ryder (GBR22) also taking part. The flag parade will feature performances from the artists and a selection of British pop music’s biggest hits.
The evening will of course be highlighted by the 26 competition songs, but while we await the results, there will also be a number of extra performances. Although Sam Ryder was ‘only’ runner-up last year, he has gone on to top the charts with his hit song (and album of the same name) Space Man, which has become a hit both in the island nation and worldwide. In 2022, he was the Eurovision artist who performed at Queen Elizabeth II’s platinum jubilee and with Queen’s band in the UK – achieving increasing success. Ryder will also premiere his new song Mountain on the night of the Grand Final.
“Liverpool Songbook”: a look at the big book of British songs before the points. “Liverpool is considered to be the birthplace of pop music, which has been captivating the world with its music since the 1960s. In a spectacular one-off performance, six iconic Eurovision performers return to the stage – to perform a popular anthem from the Liverpool songbook. During the interval, Eurovision’s greatest hits will perform Liverpool’s greatest hits! Featuring Mahmood (ITA19, 22), Netta (ISR18), Daði Freyr (ISL20, 21), Cornelia Jakobs (Sweden2022), Duncan Laurence (NDL19) and Liverpool’s very own Eurovision icon Sonia, celebrating 30 years of Eurovision (GBR93).”
The Grand Final will be hosted by Eurovision legend Graham Norton, award-winning Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina (of HARDKISS), internationally acclaimed musical theatre artist, three-time Olivier Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning actress Hannah Waddingham, and singer-songwriter, pop star and television presenter Alesha Dixon at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on 13 May 2023.
